This collection was purchased by the Library from David J. Holmes of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 10, 1995.

Scope and Content

There are four items, 1902, 1930, and 1933, relating to Edgar Allan Poe . The letter, February 12, 1902, from John Henry Ingram , London, to Chevalier E. R. Reynolds , Washington, D. C., makes references to: being busy with the London telephone matter; having so many heavy charges to pay on letters from abroad and some being "insults about Poe!"; and, promising with others to assist Miss Rosalie Poe prior to her death. The letter, December 6, 1930, from Hervey Allen , Felicity Hall, Somerset, Bermuda, to the noted Poe collector, Richard Gimbel , Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, states that "reasons for Poe's leaving Philadelphia on April 6th 1844 to go to New York ..." are fully discussed in Allen's Israfel: The Life and Times of Edgar Allan Poe ; reveals the strong motive of Poe to leave Philadelphia to go to New York ; and, refers to one of Poe's residences on N. 7th Street. There are also two missives from Richard Gimbel to Hervey Allen : letter (carbon), October 31, 1933, inviting Allen and his wife to visit when in Philadelphia , and revealing plans for a dinner to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the birth of Poe; and, telegram, December 8, 1933, providing specific date and place of Poe dinner, and requesting him to attend and to speak.
